Marsha King

Location: Pikangikum First Nation, Northern Ontario
Term: Two Years
Departure: Training July 2019, Permanent Placement August 26, 2019

Marsha has always had a heart for Canada. She has visited several remote communities across Canada including Nunavut and Northern Quebec on short-term missions trips and visits with her family. Through those experiences, she began to see the beauty and the brokenness of these isolated places and the move of God in the First People’s of Canada.  She also saw the disparity of resources, food insecurity, the effects of residential schools, and hopelessness first hand. On one visit to Pangnirtung, Nunavut she experienced a community of 1200 mourn the suicide of a pregnant 16-year old and knew that this was not normal or right.

Through prayer and fasting, Marsha continued to pray for her brothers and sisters in these remote places while maintaining a robust teaching career of over 19 years, in both Halton Elementary and Secondary public schools.  In December of 2018, Marsha heard very clearly from God that this was the time to move and to go and teach in the North. Working through a secular organization called Teach for Canada, Marsha was interviewed and selected to work for several different communities.

It was during this time that God moved her to accept a teaching position in Pikangikum First Nation (2016 World Health Organizations “Suicide Capital of the World”).  This Ojibway Community is a fly-in community about 500km northwest of Thunder Bay. It is accessible by ice road during the heart of winter season and is a two-hour drive from Red Lake in the winter.

Marsha will be teaching at Eechobay Birchstick School. She will use her skills as a Music Educator and a Classroom Teacher to teach students in the K-12 school of 1000. She is hoping to learn about the culture and the people, see how God is moving in the community, begin to assess the needs of the community, and mobilize the Body of Christ to share our knowledge and resources as necessary. She hopes to be the Hands and Feet of Jesus in this community and share His saving love and grace with others while meeting the practical needs for education and bringing hope to a young generation
