Step 4: Discuss the Teaching Together

Read and Explain God’s Word

  1. Read Matthew 25:31-46, then discuss these questions;
    1. What is the title of this passage in the Bible?
    2. Who are the main characters in this passage?
    3. What does it mean when the passage says, “When the Son of Man comes in his glory”? Who is the Son of Man? (v.31)
    4. Will Jesus judge every person to determine if they are His disciples or not? (vv.32-33)
    5. What does Jesus do with His sheep (disciples)? (v.34)
    6. How did the people that acted like sheep show their love for Jesus? (vv.35-37)
    7. What does Jesus do with the goats (people who turned away from Him and did not become His disciples)? (v.41)
    8. How did the people that acted like goats show that they did NOT love Jesus? (vv. 42-46)

Show God’s Word

  1. What are you excited about this Christmas?
  1. Christmas is about the birth of Jesus! When He comes back to earth again, He will gather His sheep (His disciples), and give them eternal life. What does the passage we read today tell us about how Jesus will know who His sheep are? (Hint: vv. 35-37)
  1. Sheep follow their shepherd. How can we follow Jesus our Shepherd? Find some scriptures to match the ways below
    1. Read His Word
    2. Prayer
    3. Obedience to God’s Word

Apply God’s Word

  1. Are you more like Jesus’ sheep (loving, wanting to do things Jesus’ way, put others needs and wants before your own) or like a goat (stubborn, want to do things your way, put your wants and needs before others)?
  1. Who is one person you can show Jesus’ love and care for this Christmas? Who is it? What can you do? When will you do it?
  1. Take some time now to pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help you follow Jesus like a sheep, and to love others because you love Him.
  1. One of the greatest ways we can learn how to follow Jesus like a sheep is to read the Bible.  The more we know God’s Word, the better we can live out God’s Word! Use the Grow Up In Christ planner and schedule the time you need to spend time with Jesus. Remember- as you get close to Him, He will get close to you and give you the strength you need to live faithfully! Share your plan with your family, friends, and the Hope Kids team (hkids@hopeottawa.ca)
  1. Take time this week to memorize Matthew 25:40 to remember that we can love God by loving others who need it! “And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.”
  1. In order to follow Jesus our Shepherd, we have to know Him and become His sheep (disciple). To become a disciple of Jesus, all we have to do is believe that Jesus is the Son of God and the only Saviour. God sent His only Son, Jesus, to come to earth and die for our sins, so we can be saved and have a personal relationship with Him. To accept this gift from God, we must believe that Jesus died for us so that we can be God’s child too. We first must repent of our sin (turn away from it) and believe in Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. When we do this, we put our faith in Him as our Lord and Saviour. If you want to begin a personal relationship with Him, and put your faith in Him alone, all you need to do is;

A_________ (Admit) that you have done wrong and ask God to forgive you for disobeying Him.

B_______ (Believe) that God sent Jesus to take the punishment for your sin. Trust that you are forgiven because Jesus made you right with God

C________ (Choose) to spend your whole life depending on God’s power to help you say no to sin. Rely on God to help you tell others that God is your leader and the most important person in your life.

Step 5: Pray the Truth Together
