Stay Pure

Step 1: Sing the Songs

Step 2: Memorize the Word Together

Step 3: Watch the Teaching Together

Step 4: Discuss the Teaching Together

Stay Pure

Read God’s Word

  1. Spend time reading Matthew 4:1-11 with your family.

Explain God’s Word

  1. What does temptation mean?
  2. Sin is defined as “Missing God’s mark”. What does this mean?
  3. Is temptation the same thing as sin? Why or why not?
  4. In Matthew 4:1-11, we learn that Jesus Himself was tempted.
    • Who tempted Jesus? (v.1)
    • What kinds of things did Satan tempt Jesus with? (v. 3, 6, 9)
    • Did Jesus sin when he was tempted? (v. 11)
    • How did Jesus fight temptation? (v. 4, 7, 10)

Show God’s Word

  1. Pretend you are going to go on a camping trip. What things do you need to plan to bring with you? Is making a plan before you go camping important? Why or why not?
  2. Just like when we prepare ourselves to go on a camping trip, we need to make a plan to prepare ourselves for when we are tempted so we do not sin.
    • Read Psalm 119:9. How does God tell us we are to fight for purity?
    • What are some ways we can store up God’s Word in our heart?
  3. How does knowing Jesus was tempted too, help you to fight temptation and say no to sin?

Apply God’s Word

  1. We are all tempted to sin. What are some things that you are tempted by?

  1. Look back at the things you listed in question 9, make a plan to help you fight these temptations. What specific things can you do to fight these temptations so you do not sin?

  1. When we share with others the things that tempt us to sin, it is called accountability. They can help us make and keep a plan to fight temptation. Who is someone you could ask to help you keep your plan to fight temptation?

  1. God’s Word helps us fight temptation. Use the Grow Up in Christ week planner to plan ahead how you can grow up in Christ and spend time in His Word, in prayer, and in helping others to grow in their faith too. Share your plan with your family, friends, and the Hope Kids team (hkids@hopeottawa.ca)

  1. Make it your goal this week to memorize Psalm 119:9 with your family. It says: ”How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.”

  1. When we know who God is we want to love what He loves (purity) and hate what He hates (sin). God wants to help us be like Jesus and fight temptation. To do this, He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ to come to earth and die for our sins, so we can be saved and have a personal relationship with Him. Through Jesus, we can approach God with confidence in prayer, because we are His disciples. To be a disciple of God, we must give up our lives and become like Him! How can we do this? We first must repent of our sin and believe in Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. When we do this, we put our faith in Him. If you want to begin a personal relationship with Him, and put your faith in Him alone, all you need to do is;
  • A_______  (Admit) that you have done wrong and ask God to forgive you for disobeying Him.
  • B_______ (Believe) that God sent Jesus to take the punishment for your sin. Trust that you are forgiven because Jesus made you right with God.
  • C______ (Choose) to spend your whole life depending on God’s power to help you say no to sin, and to worship God only. Rely on God to help you tell others that God is your leader and the most important person in your life.

Step 5: Pray the Truth Together
