No Excuses

Step 1: Sing the Songs

Step 2: Memorize the Word Together

Step 3: Watch the Teaching Together

Step 4: Discuss the Teaching Together

No Excuses

Read God’s Word

  1. Spend time reading 1 Samuel 3:1-21 with your family.

Explain God’s Word

  1. What does it mean to make an excuse?
  2. What does it mean to obey?
  3. Read 1 Samuel 3:1-20, then answer these questions;
    1. Where was Samuel? (vv. 2-3)
    2. Who was taking care of Samuel? (v. 2)
    3. What time of day was it? (v. 3)
    4. Who did Samuel think had called him? (vv.4-8b)
    5. Who was actually calling Samuel? (vv. 4, 6, 8, 10)
    6. Did Samuel always reply when he was called? Did Samuel reply immediately, or did he wait until it was a better time for him? (vv. 5, 6, 8, 10)

Show God’s Word

  1. Has your mom, dad, or teacher ever called your name to get your attention and asked you to do something that was not sinful? Do you always obey right away? Why or why not?

  1. If you make up an excuse so you don’t have to do something that you are asked to do, but later obey, is it still a sin? (Hint: James 4:!7-Delayed obedience is still disobedience!)

Apply God’s Word

  1. We can choose to obey or we can choose to make excuses and disobey. What are some reasons you are tempted to disobey? (Hint: James 1:14-15-I want my own way!)

  1. What can we do when we are tempted to disobey? (Hints: Matthew 6:13-Pray and ask for help from the Holy Spirit to do what pleases God, 1 Cor. 10: 13-Look for and follow the path of obedience that God has given you).

  1. Is there something that God, your parents, caregivers, or teachers have asked you to do that you are having a hard time obeying? Have you made excuses so you don’t have to obey?

  1. Take some time to pray and repent, asking God to forgive you for disobeying and ask for Him to help you be quick to obey so you can honour and please Him.

  1. One way we can grow in our obedience is to spend time with God in prayer and in reading His Word. Use the Grow Up In Christ planner and schedule the time you need to spend time with Jesus. Remember- as you get close to Him, He will get close to you and give you the strength you need to live faithfully! Share your plan with your family, friends, and the Hope Kids team (hkids@hopeottawa.ca)

  1. Take time this week to memorize James 4:17 to remind yourself to obey God and His Word!; “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.”

  1. 1 Samuel 3:7 says “Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him”. We can’t obey God if we don’t know God. When we know who God is we want to make choices that please Him. God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ to come to earth and die for our sins, so we can be saved and have a personal relationship with Him. Through Jesus, we can approach God with confidence in prayer, because we are His disciples. To be a disciple of God, we must give up our lives and become like Him! How can we do this? We first must repent of our sin and believe in Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. When we do this, we put our faith in Him. If you want to begin a personal relationship with Him, and put your faith in Him alone, all you need to do is;
  • A_______  (Admit) that you have done wrong and ask God to forgive you for disobeying Him.
  • B_______ (Believe) that God sent Jesus to take the punishment for your sin. Trust that you are forgiven because Jesus made you right with God.

C______ (Choose) to spend your whole life depending on God’s power to help you say no to sin, and to worship God only. Rely on God to help you tell others that God is your leader and the most important person in your life.

Step 5: Pray the Truth Together
