Forgive Others

Read God’s Word

  1. Spend time reading Matthew 18:21-35 with your family.

Explain God’s Word

  1. Based on Matthew 18:21-35...
    1. How many time does Jesus tell Peter he should forgive others? (v.22)
    2. The king wanted to settle accounts with his servants. What does this mean? (V.23-24)
    3. How much did the unforgiving servant owe the king? (v. 24)
    4. What was going to happen to the unforgiving servant since he could not pay the king? (v. 25)
    5. What did the king actually do to the unforgiving servant after the servant begged him for patience? (v. 26-27)
    6. After the king forgave the unforgiving servant his debt, what did the unforgiving servant do to the person that owed him money? (vv. 28).
    7. How did the unforgiving servant respond when the man begged him for patience (v.v. 29-30)
    8. What happened to the unforgiving servant who did not give the same patience to the man who owed him, that the king had given? (vv.31-34)
    9. What does Jesus say will happen to us if we do not forgive others like God has forgiven us? (v.35)

Show God’s Word

  1. Think about the last time someone made you feel really mad. How did you respond to them when you were mad? Was it hard to forgive them? Why or why not?
  1. How should knowing Jesus forgives you for your sin, lead you to forgive others who sin against you?

Apply God’s Word

  1. Is there someone you need to forgive? Who is it? What is stopping you from forgiving them?
  1. Take time this week to memorize Colossians 3:13 to help you remember to forgive others, “bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.”
  1. It is hard to forgive others like Christ forgave us if we do not know or remember what Christ has already done for us. Use the Grow Up in Christ week planner to learn how Christ has already forgiven us by spending time in His Word, in prayer, and in helping others to grow in their faith too. Share your plan with your family, friends, and the Hope Kids team (hkids@hopeottawa.ca)
  1. We can forgive others when we know how much God has forgiven us. God’s greatest act of forgiveness happened when God sent His only Son, Jesus, to come to earth and die for our sins, so we can be saved and have a personal relationship with Him. Through Jesus, we can understand God’s Word and approach God with confidence in prayer, when we are His disciples. To be a disciple of Jesus, we must give up our lives and become like Him! How can we do this? We first must repent of our sin and believe in Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. When we do this, we put our faith in Him. If you want to begin a personal relationship with Him, and put your faith in Him alone, all you need to do is;
  • A_______  (Admit) that you have done wrong and ask God to forgive you for disobeying Him.
  • B_______ (Believe) that God sent Jesus to take the punishment for your sin. Trust that you are forgiven because Jesus made you right with God.
  • C______ (Choose) to spend your whole life depending on God’s power to help you say no to sin, and to worship God only. Rely on God to help you tell others that God is your leader and the most important person in your life.

Step 5: Pray the Truth Together
