Sin Stinks to God

Step 1: Sing the Songs

Step 2: Memorize the Word Together

Step 3: Watch the Teaching Together

Step 4: Discuss the Teaching Together

Read and Explain God’s Word

  1. Read Luke 2:41-52, then answer these questions;
    1. What is the title of this passage in the Bible?
    2. Who are the main characters?
    3. Where was Jesus going with His family? (vv. 41)
    4. How old was Jesus in this story? (v. 42)
    5. Did Jesus go home with His parents? (vv. 43-45)
    6. Where was Jesus? What was He doing when His parents found Him? (v. 46)
    7. Did Jesus know God’s Word? (v. 47)
    8. Why is it important that we know that “Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favour with God and man”? What does this tell us about Jesus? What does it tell us about us? (v.52)

Show God’s Word

Sin= To miss the mark. Like when an arrow flies wide of the target’s bulls-eye, when we sin, we miss the mark of God’s righteousness. Sin includes anything we think or do that is against or breaks God’s law. God’s laws are all about how to love God and people. So when we sin we are not being loving; we go our own way instead of God’s way.

  1. Have you ever eaten something you thought was good but it was actually bad? What was it? How did you know it was bad?
  2. Sin can be like food that looks good, but is spoiled, and is not really good for you. What are some ways you can learn more about what is really good for you and what is sin?
  3. Jesus never sinned. He was perfect. How does this truth help us to trust Jesus, and follow His Word even from a young age?

Apply God’s Word

  1. What is something that you are tempted to do, even though it is wrong and sinful? (hint: maybe cheat on a board game? Yell at your brother or sister? Disobey your parents).
  2. How can you fight the temptation and sin you listed in question 4? What can you do? (hint: read the Bible, pray, confess to someone you trust). Who can you ask for help?
  3. Take some time now to pray and ask God to help you say no to sin. If you have sinned against someone else, ask God for forgiveness, then go to the person you sinned against and say sorry and ask them for forgiveness too.

“God, you are perfect and I am not. Please help me to say no to the sin of __________. Thank you for helping me. Teach me how to be more like your son Jesus. Amen”

  1. We can learn more about what sin is by reading the Bible. The more we know God’s Word, the better we can live out God’s Word! Use the Grow Up In Christ planner and schedule the time you need to spend time with Jesus. Remember- as you get close to Him, He will get close to you and give you the strength you need to live faithfully! Share your plan with your family, friends, and the Hope Kids team (hkids@hopeottawa.ca)
  2. Take time this week to memorize Luke 2:52  to remind you that Jesus was perfect, and even he studied God’s word and prayed from a young age– just like we need to! “And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.
  3. Have you ever made the decision to put your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour? To become a believer in Jesus, we have to believe that Jesus is the Son of God and the only Saviour. God sent His only Son, Jesus, to come to earth and die for our sins, so we can be saved and have a personal relationship with Him. To accept this gift from God, we must believe that Jesus died for us so that we can be God’s child too. We first must repent of our sin (turn away from it) and believe in Jesus as our Lord and Saviour. When we do this, we put our faith in Him as our Lord and Saviour. If you want to begin a personal relationship with Him, and put your faith in Him alone, all you need to do is;

A_______  (Admit) that you have done wrong and ask God to forgive you for disobeying Him.
B_______ (Believe) that God sent Jesus to take the punishment for your sin. Trust that you are forgiven because Jesus made you right with God.
C______ (Choose) to spend your whole life depending on God’s power to help you say no to sin, and to worship God only. Rely on God to help you tell others that God is your leader and the most important person in your life.

Step 5: Pray the Truth Together
